Dom Maria Himmelfahrt in Bolzano

Dom Maria Himmelfahrt (Maria Himmelfahrt Cathedral) is Bolzano’s landmark and simultaneously a treasure of roman and gothic building technique as well as a symbol of the continuously fruitful interaction of southern and northern influences in Bolzano.  The history of Dom Maria Himmelfahrt in Bolzano goes back to the 5th Century.  Built as a roman church, the cathedral got its gothic design in the 14th Century.  It was the first gothic hall church in architectural history.

Among the things to see in this magnificent South Tyrolean church are the ambulatory, the so-called “Plappermadonna”, a sandstone pulpit and a chapel of grace with frescos.
