The history of beer - a hotel with an in-house brewery in South Tyrol
The history of beer indulgence
4,000 BC
Accidental discovery of beer by a baker in Mesopotamia who left his bread dough in the sun. The yeast cultures from the air began the fermentation process and the ancestor of today’s beer was born!
Sumerians, Egyptians and Germanic tribes
The Sumerians developed beer further. The drink was immediately very popular. The Egyptians preferred their beer sweetened and flavoured with saffron and herbs. The Germanic tribes brought the drink to Europe and no longer brewed it from bread, but from grain.
Middle-ages
During the middle-ages, monks concentrated on brewing beer as drinking liquids in the form of beer was permitted during the fasting periods. The first monastery taverns appeared.
German purity law
Duke Wilhelm IV passed the German purity law in 1516, which only permitted the use of barley or white malt, hops, water and yeast in the production of beer.
21st Century
The knowledge surrounding the art of making beer has been passed down for centuries and this tradition is upheld in its natural form in the Brauhotel Martinerhof. Taste the difference!
